Defensive chemical sprays are sold in aluminum canisters that range in size from 1/3 ounce to 16 ounces (one pound).

Canisters have different handles, triggers, and trigger locks. Familiarize yourself with the locking mechanism, and be sure that the lock is engaged when the canister is being stored.

Be sure that you now where the trigger is, how to aim the canister, and how much force is required to depress the trigger.

Do not store canisters in direct sunlight, or near open flames or sparks. Do not leave canisters in unventilated vehicles parked in direct sunlight, especially on warm days. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations prohibit passengers from carrying defensive sprays onto commercial aircraft.

The shelf-life of a defensive spray canister depends on the propellant, carrier, and the gaskets near the nozzle and valve. Check the label for the manufacturer's recommended shelf-life, which usually is one to two years. Periodically test fire the canister outdoors to ensure that it is in proper working order.

Defensive sprays are frequently sold with plastic or leather holsters that are available in many styles and patterns. Be sure that the canister=s trigger can be depressed without having to open the holster.
